The BMW 3.0d N57D30 is one of BMW's most powerful inline six-cylinder diesel engines — yet it still has known weak points that can lead to serious engine damage at high mileage. MIK Motoren not only rebuilds this engine to factory standard, but also specifically eliminates the original design weaknesses. The result: a replacement engine that is more reliable than factory.

MIK upgrades — why this engine lasts longer

The 3.0d N57 has typical problem areas that we systematically address in every rebuild. Our upgrades are based on years of experience with this engine type and are the direct answer to the most common failure patterns.

• Upgraded oil pump — The biggest weakness of this engine is its oil pump, which does not deliver sufficient oil pressure from the factory and repeatedly leads to failures. Without enough oil pressure, warning messages, rattling noises, and loss of power quickly appear and almost always lead to engine damage. For this reason, we use a specially developed oil pump that increases oil pressure across the entire RPM range and protects the engine from wear.
• Alignment of the main bearing bore — As mileage increases, the crankshaft bearing seats in the aluminum engine block shift, so proper alignment of the bearings is no longer guaranteed and engine damage can occur. The main bearing bore must therefore always be honed and fixed with the help of hardened shim elements. Otherwise, another engine failure is only a matter of time.
• High-quality bearing shells — As part of the overhaul, all components are precisely measured and machined. The bearing clearance between the individual components is set for lifetime and performance, ensuring especially smooth engine operation. Combined with high-quality bearing shells, this engine is then also ideally suited for the performance-oriented driver.
• The correct cylinder bore surface — Over time, different cylinder liner types were used. On the one hand, robust grey cast iron liners, and on the other, more vulnerable plasma or AluSil coatings, which tend to develop scoring after relatively low mileage and affect the engines' compression. We use exclusively grey cast iron cylinder liners to extend the engine's lifetime.
