1.8T 20V ATW engine rebuild — better than factory

The 1.8T 20V with engine code ATW is the cult engine of the VAG group — turbocharged 150 to 225 hp in millions of vehicles. Its weak point: the oil pump and pistons fail under heavy load or as the engine ages. MIK Motoren rebuilds this engine from the ground up and installs components that outperform the factory version.

MIK upgrades — why this engine lasts longer

With the ATW, we know every weak point. The rebuild includes not only wear parts — it eliminates the design flaws that cause premature damage in the original.

Upgraded oil pump The biggest weak point of this engine is its oil pump, which does not deliver enough oil pressure from the factory and repeatedly leads to failures. Without sufficient oil pressure, warning messages, rattling noises, and loss of power quickly become noticeable and almost always lead to engine failure. For this reason, we use a specially developed oil pump that increases oil pressure across every RPM range and protects the engine from wear.
Reinforced pistons Performance-tuned or driven hard, this engine is increasingly prone to piston damage in the ring area. It is not uncommon for oil consumption of 0.5L/1000km or more to occur, and compression as well as power drop noticeably. The increased temperature in the combustion chamber then puts particular stress on the pistons and valves. Modified pistons, improved piston rings, and a specially honed cylinder surface provide the remedy.
High-quality bearing shellsAs part of the overhaul, all components are precisely measured and machined. The bearing clearance between the individual components is set for lifetime and performance, ensuring particularly smooth engine operation. Combined with high-quality bearing shells, this engine is then ideally suited for the sporty driver as well.

How much does the ATW engine rebuild cost?

The ATW engine rebuild starts at €4051 for the partial rebuild without installation. With removal & installation service, it is approx. €8051. The full service including vehicle pickup is approx. €9375. Prices excl. VAT.

What are the MIK upgrades for the ATW?

For the ATW, in addition to all wear parts, we also replace the well-known weak points of the production engine. This means: reinforced components, optimized sealing surfaces, and parts that significantly increase the lifetime well beyond new-car standards.

How long does the engine rebuild take?

The rebuild usually takes 5–10 working days from the time the engine arrives at our facility. For engines with severe damage (e.g. engine damage caused by lack of oil), it may take a little longer. We will keep you informed throughout the entire processing time.

What warranty do I receive on the rebuilt engine?

We provide a 24-month warranty on all MIK replacement engines. The warranty covers material and workmanship defects. The requirement is professional installation and the use of the specified engine oils in accordance with our installation instructions.
