Engine Rebuild 1.8T 20V ARZ — Better Than Factory

The 1.8T 20V with engine code ARZ is the cult engine of the VAG group — turbocharged 150 to 225 hp in millions of vehicles. Its weak point: the oil pump and pistons fail under heavy load or as the engine ages. MIK Motoren rebuilds this engine from the ground up and installs components that surpass the factory version.

MIK upgrades — why this engine lasts longer

With the ARZ, we know every weak point. The rebuild does not just include wear parts — it eliminates the design flaws that cause premature damage in the original.

Upgraded oil pump The biggest weak point of this engine is its oil pump, which does not deliver enough oil pressure from the factory and repeatedly leads to failures. Without sufficient oil pressure, warning messages, rattling noises, and loss of power quickly become noticeable and almost always lead to engine damage. For this reason, we use a specially developed oil pump that increases oil pressure across the entire RPM range and protects the engine from wear.
Reinforced pistonsWhen tuned for more power or driven sportily, this engine is increasingly prone to piston damage in the ring zone. It is not uncommon for oil consumption to rise to 0.5L/1000km or more, and compression as well as power drop significantly. The increased temperature in the combustion chamber then places particular strain on the pistons and valves. Modified pistons, improved piston rings, and a specially honed cylinder surface provide the remedy.
High-quality bearing shellsAs part of the overhaul, all components are precisely measured and machined. The bearing clearance between the individual components is adjusted for lifetime and performance, ensuring exceptionally smooth engine running. Combined with high-quality bearing shells, this engine is also ideally suited for the sporty driver.

What does the ARZ engine overhaul cost?

The ARZ engine overhaul starts at €4051 for the partial overhaul without installation. With removal & installation service, it is approx. €8051. The full service including vehicle pickup is approx. €9375. Prices excl. VAT.

What are the MIK upgrades for the ARZ?

For the ARZ, in addition to all wear parts, we also replace the known weak points of the stock engine. This means: reinforced components, optimized sealing surfaces, and parts that significantly increase the lifetime well beyond new-car standards.

How long does the engine overhaul take?

The overhaul usually takes 5-10 working days from the time the engine arrives with us. For engines with severe damage (e.g. engine damage due to lack of oil), it may take a little longer. We will keep you informed throughout the entire processing time.

What warranty do I get on the overhauled engine?

We provide a 24-month warranty on all MIK replacement engines. The warranty covers material and workmanship defects. The prerequisite is professional installation and the use of the specified engine oils in accordance with our installation instructions.
