The 1.4 TSI/TFSI (EA111) with engine code CTHD is a widely used unit from the VAG group (VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda) — with known weak points that regularly show up at high mileage or with sporty driving. MIK Motoren does not simply rebuild this engine back to factory standard, but specifically eliminates the original design weaknesses. The result: a replacement engine that is better than factory.

MIK Upgrades — why this engine lasts longer

The 1.4 TSI/TFSI (EA111) has specific engine-side weak points that we know from years of hands-on experience. Our upgrades are not a marketing gimmick — they are the direct answer to the most common failure patterns.

• Upgraded oil pump — The biggest weak point of this engine is its oil pump, which from the factory does not generate enough oil pressure and repeatedly leads to failures. Without sufficient oil pressure, warning messages, rattling noises, and loss of power quickly appear and almost always lead to engine damage. For this reason, we use a specially developed oil pump that increases oil pressure across the entire rev range and protects the engine from wear.
• Reinforced pistons — When performance is increased or the engine is driven hard, this engine is more prone to piston damage in the ring area. It is not uncommon for oil consumption of 0.5L/1000km or more to develop, and compression as well as power drop noticeably. The increased temperature in the combustion chamber then puts particular strain on the pistons and valves. Modified pistons, improved piston rings, and a specially honed cylinder surface provide a remedy.
• High-quality bearing shells — As part of the overhaul, all components are precisely measured and machined. The bearing clearance between the individual components is set for lifetime and performance, ensuring especially smooth engine operation. Combined with high-quality bearing shells, this engine is then also ideally suited for the sporty driver.
• Reinforced timing chain kit — The increased wear of the timing chain is largely related to the chain's design and the freedom of movement of the chain links on the guide rails. A modified chain design, along with a special guide-rail geometry, ensures maximum lifetime of the timing chains in this engine.
